Be clever, play brilliant, and become versed in craps the correct way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s paladins bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French relocated south and located refuge in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was derived from the name of the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
