Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was derived from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
