Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about 100 years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French headed south and discovered sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is derived from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. A great many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
