Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he invented the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
