Dice and dice games date back to the Crusades, but modern craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard amid a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and located sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he created the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
